Bad TV and Dementia: the surprising link!

Did you ever sit through a show that seemed to forget its own plot?

Well, that's what my partner and I went through last night with A Discovery of Witches. We were ready for some action, but by the second season, we were drowning in bizarre time travel plot lines and wondering what had happened to the show where a cool vampire was driving a Tesla.

Before long, with boredom creeping in, one of us—I won’t say who—started yelling at the screen, “Do something!" (OK, it was me.)

All of a sudden, our frustration turned into giggles. And just like that, it became a hilarious evening, Mystery Science Theater 3000-style. (Do you remember that old show?)

It reminded me of what I teach in my course on radical acceptance. When caregiving gets overwhelming, we sometimes want to yell, “Do something!” But often, we just need to lean into the chaos and give ourselves the freedom to laugh, scream, or cry at it.

Accepting what’s happening—without the extra drama—gives us a clearer path to handle the tough stuff. No magic, no time travel, just being present and handling what’s in front of us.
